Our TEEN Anger Management Program
“I really like the group. It
has been a very
enlightening and helpful
and it has definitely
helped me control my
anger.” Christine  L.
Through the use of exercises and group interaction,
they learn to “own” their anger and explore what “really
want” when they explode. They explore their anger from
their own point of view and from the point of view of
others.

The teen anger management program is one of our
most successful programs. Adolescence is one of the
most difficult times of life. During the stage of
adolescence, children experience a physiological
revolution as their bodies change from that of children to
that of young adults. All too often the psychological
revolution that occurs simultaneously is ignored.
Frequently, young people at this age are confused,
impatient, frustrated and angry. Many of them feel
misunderstood by parents and teachers. They feel
under tremendous pressure to be popular with their peer
group; they try on different identities like coats and often
appear to have “attitudes” to older individuals. The teen
program focuses on many of these issues.

MFT NYs anger management for teens is one of the most successful anger management groups in the country. It
encompasses a wholistic approach and incorporates working with teens at many different levels—social as well as
psychological. In our teenager group, teens learn techniques that help them cool off before they let their anger out. Here
they examine their “anger buttons” or what fuels their anger. Next they focus on what they are like when they get angry.
Then they consider “being smart” rather than “being angry.”
Dealing with “You.” Who are you anyway?
Dealing with “Them” (Parents, teachers and
other adults).
Getting angry the old way.
How to say what you mean and mean what you
say.
Evaluating the new way.
The teen group helps teens examine the feelings they
experience that typically leads them to anger bursts:

In addition, there are other components to the anger
management group for teens. The second component
is enhancing self esteem. This too is an integral part
of the program. Here, through the use of shared
exercises and group support, teens learn ways of
enhancing their self-esteem. They learn how their
level of self-esteem affects them in life. Some
concepts for teens to explore are:
In the teen anger management group, teens
learn skills such as:
In this group, the Teens also learn acceptance of
themselves and others. They explore their own worst
enemy—their inner critic. This is a crucial step in the
developmental process of self-esteem and self-worth.
It is here that they learn about their negative self-talk
and their own inner critic. Through this positive,
empowering exploration, teens come to know
themselves in a new authentic way. With this
acceptance comes a comfort with themselves that will
be evident in their daily relationships.
The Teen Anger Management Group is an
empowerment group. Through the use of exercises,
multimedia, and group interaction, social skills are
enhances and comfort with peers is increased. They
begin to communicate in authentic ways, learning how
to achieve what they “really” want. In the group, the
teenagers interact with each other with acceptance
and compassion. Through the use of positive
affirmations, teens learn respect and appreciation for
their own and other people’s feelings.
